16 Die from Heat-Related Causes in Two Hours at Bihar Hospital

In Aurangabad, Bihar, a record-setting heatwave has led to a tragic incident where 16 people died from heat-related causes within just two hours at the district hospital. The city recorded a maximum temperature of 44 degrees Celsius on Thursday, while on Wednesday it hit 48.2 degrees, marking the highest temperature ever recorded in Bihar. Family members of the deceased were seen grieving at the hospital. A doctor mentioned that 35 more patients were admitted due to heat-related issues but assured that the hospital has sufficient doctors, medicines, ice packs, and additional coolers.

Bihar is currently suffering from an intense heatwave, prompting the state government to close all private and government schools, coaching centers, and anganwadi centers until June 8. This decision came after numerous students fainted due to the extreme heat. In Sheikhpura district, at least 16 girls fainted at a government school. With no ambulance available, they were transported to a hospital on two-wheelers and e-rickshaws.

Criticism has been directed towards the state administration for its handling of the situation. Concerns have been raised about the adequacy of the government’s response, particularly regarding the protection of children in such extreme weather.

The India Meteorological Department has issued a severe heatwave alert for the next two days in Bihar, urging people to take necessary precautions. The ongoing heatwave continues to pose significant health risks, and authorities are under pressure to manage the crisis effectively.
