Assam's Chief Minister, Himanta Biswa Sarma, has reiterated his commitment to upholding the integrity of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) process by stating that he will step down from his position if even a single individual, who hasn't applied for NRC, receives Indian citizenship.

Sarma's declaration follows widespread protests across the state against the implementation of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, 2019 (CAA), which aims to grant citizenship to undocumented non-Muslim migrants from neighboring countries.

In response to the protests, Sarma warned political parties against organizing strikes that violate court orders, emphasizing that non-compliance could lead to the cancellation of their registration. He urged dissenters to express their opposition through proper channels rather than resorting to street protests.

Additionally, the Guwahati Police issued a stern warning against organizing complete strikes, threatening legal action for any damage to public or private property, including railway and highway infrastructure. They emphasized the recovery of costs for any damages incurred and the initiation of legal proceedings under relevant laws.
