Are Raj Thackeray and Eknath Shinde considering a collaboration in Maharashtra?

The ruling coalition in Maharashtra, led by Eknath Shinde, may potentially see a Thackeray joining its ranks for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Sources within the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), led by Raj Thackeray, revealed to INDIA TODAY that Raj had reached out to Shinde's Shiv Sena and their ally BJP for a possible electoral alliance.

Raj Thackeray, the estranged cousin of Uddhav Thackeray, president of Shiv Sena, had previously split from the Shiv Sena in the 2022 rebellion led by Shinde. This split resulted in the formation of a new coalition government with the BJP. Recently, key MNS figures, including former legislators and a former Mumbai corporator, met with Shinde and BJP's Devendra Fadnavis to explore the option of aligning with the ruling Mahayuti alliance.

Although the Shiv Sena spokesperson confirmed the meetings, she stated that no official discussions were underway. Nonetheless, the meetings have generated significant speculation, especially after the BJP Mumbai chief's visit to Raj Thackeray's residence.

Opinions within the Shinde camp vary regarding the potential alliance, with some considering it crucial while others questioning the MNS's organizational strength. However, it's acknowledged that MNS could garner a significant number of votes, particularly in Mumbai.

Political analysts suggest that an MNS-Mahayuti alliance could create a perception of a united front against the opposition Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi, comprising Shiv Sena, NCP, and Congress.

Yet, doubts remain regarding the transfer of votes and the MNS's past support for various parties. If the Mahayuti alliance doesn't materialize, MNS is reportedly preparing to contest independently in six to ten Lok Sabha seats in 2024..
