Bindyarani Devi secured the bronze medal at the 2024 IWF World Cup.

In the non-Olympic women's 55kg category of the IWF World Cup 2024 held in Phuket, Thailand, Bindyarani Devi showcased her prowess by clinching a bronze medal. Her remarkable performance saw her lifting a total of 196kg, with a silver medal achievement in the clean and jerk discipline. This Indian weightlifter's achievement comes in the wake of her previous success at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, where she secured a silver medal with a total lift of 203kg, showcasing her consistent performance on the international stage.

At the IWF World Cup 2024, Bindyarani Devi faced stiff competition from her counterparts. Kang Hyon Gyong from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea emerged as the gold medalist, lifting an impressive total of 234kg (103kg snatch + 131kg clean and jerk). Mihaela Cambei from Romania secured the silver medal with a personal best performance of 201kg (91kg snatch + 110kg clean and jerk). Despite facing tough competition, Bindyarani Devi demonstrated her skill and determination throughout the competition.

The 25-year-old athlete began her campaign with a minor setback, failing her first attempt in the snatch category at 83kg. However, she quickly recovered, succeeding in her second attempt. Despite falling short in her third attempt at 86kg, Bindyarani Devi showcased resilience and focused on the next discipline, the clean and jerk.

In the clean and jerk category, Bindyarani Devi displayed her strength and technique, recording successful lifts of 110kg and 113kg in her initial attempts. However, her final attempt at 119kg proved unsuccessful. Despite this, her consistent performance throughout the competition earned her a silver medal in the clean and jerk category.

The IWF World Cup follows a format where medals are awarded for individual disciplines such as snatch, clean and jerk, as well as for the total lift. Bindyarani Devi's achievement underscores her potential and determination as she continues to strive for excellence in her sport.

In addition to her success at the IWF World Cup, Bindyarani Devi's performance has implications for her Olympic qualification. Currently ranked 29th in the Olympic Qualification Ranking for the women's 59kg category, she is vying for a spot in the Paris 2024 Olympics. The top 10 ranked eligible lifters in each weight category secure a quota for the Olympics, and Bindyarani Devi is working hard to secure her place among them.

Mirabai Chanu, another Indian weightlifter, also competed in the IWF World Cup 2024 in the women's 49kg category, finishing 12th in the standings. With her strong performance and current second-place ranking overall, Mirabai Chanu is poised to secure an Olympic quota for India.

Bindyarani Devi and Mirabai Chanu represented India as the only two athletes competing in the IWF World Cup 2024, highlighting their dedication and commitment to representing their country on the international stage. The competition concludes on April 11, and their performances serve as a testament to the talent and potential of Indian weightlifting.
