Celebrate Holi 2024 with Homemade Organic Colors!!!

Discover how to create red, yellow, green, grey, magenta, pink, and various other colors in home.

The festive occasion of Holi is swiftly approaching. Each year, people across India rejoice in this vibrant celebration with great fervor and joy. This year, Holi will be celebrated on 24  March, 2024.

Traditionally, Holi revelers engage in playful activities involving water, powdered colors (gulaal), and readily available synthetic dyes. Yet, have you ever pondered the detrimental effects these synthetic colors can have on your skin?

The utilization of such synthetic hues has been shown to be abrasive, causing skin irritations, rashes, and allergic reactions. However, we offer a solution to ensure you can partake in the festivities of Holi without any concerns.

To safeguard your skin while enjoying Holi, opt for DIY Holi colors or organic alternatives crafted from household and natural ingredients.

Yellow: Combine gram flour and turmeric in a 1:2 ratio for a yellow hue. Rub the mixture between your palms for even blending, then sieve it two to three times for a fine texture. For wet yellow colors, boil marigolds in water or add organic turmeric to water for better coloring.

Red: Mix lemon juice with turmeric to turn it red due to the acidic nature of lemon. Allow the mixture to dry in a well-ventilated area, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent bleaching. Alternatively, dry red hibiscus flowers until crisp, then grind them with an equal amount of rice flour and red saffron for enhanced color quality. Boiling pomegranate peels in water also yields red wet color.

Magenta: Boil beetroot slices or red onions in water, then strain and cool the water before use.

Pink: Follow the same process as for red color, reducing the quantity of lemon juice.

Brown: Boil 200 grams of coffee with water for a brown shade, optionally adding rose water to mask the smell. Note that coffee water may cause staining.

Purple: Grind black carrots and mix with corn flour before drying. Add rose water for fragrance if desired.

Grey: Utilize Indian gooseberry seeds (amla) for grey color, mixing the dried powder with corn flour for worry-free use.

Green: Blend henna powder with rice flour or Maida for dry green color. Mixing with water produces wet colors, but be cautious as henna mixed with water can stain skin and fabric.
