Djokovic expresses disappointment over 'poor performance' following unexpected elimination from Indian Wells.

Novak Djokovic's highly anticipated return to Indian Wells ended in a stunning upset at the hands of 20-year-old Luca Nardi, marking an unexpected exit from the tournament. Despite the Serb's five-year absence due to COVID-19 travel restrictions, his hopes of claiming a record sixth title were shattered by the 123rd-ranked lucky loser.

Expressing his disappointment, Djokovic admitted to reporters that Nardi played exceptionally well and deserved the victory. Reflecting on his own performance, Djokovic acknowledged his subpar level of play, describing it as "really, really bad." He attributed the loss to a combination of Nardi's strong performance and his own off-day.

Djokovic noted his surprise at his own sloppy play, contrasting it with Nardi's sharpness on the court. The young Italian demonstrated agility and aggression, utilizing powerful serves and forehands to outplay the 24-time Grand Slam champion whom he had idolized growing up. Acknowledging his own errors, Djokovic lamented his defensive approach and lack of aggression, particularly in the decisive moments of the match. He admitted to making "terrible unforced errors" and failing to impose his game on Nardi.

Looking ahead, Djokovic expressed his intention to bounce back at the upcoming Miami Open, where he hopes to secure his first title of the year. He emphasized his unfamiliarity with a trophy-less start to the season, highlighting his usual success in earlier tournaments.

Despite the setback, Djokovic remains determined to break the negative cycle he has experienced in recent tournaments, where he has fallen short of his best form. He emphasized the importance of every future trophy, signaling his determination to return to top form and reclaim his winning ways.
