ECI Recognizes Ajit Pawar's Faction as Authentic NCP, Sharad Pawar Faction Faces Critical Decision

Ajit Pawar's faction within the NCP has been recognized by the Election Commission of India (ECI), acquiring both the party's name and symbol, which could significantly impact upcoming elections. This decision, granting Ajit Pawar's group the status of the authentic NCP, comes as a setback for party founder Sharad Pawar, especially with crucial elections on the horizon.

The Election Commission's ruling, attributing the 'Wall Clock' symbol to Ajit Pawar's faction, stemmed from an assessment of majority support within the legislative wing, despite both factions being found in breach of the party's constitution and organizational processes.

Reacting to the decision, a leader from Sharad Pawar's camp criticized the ECI's judgment, alleging external pressure influencing the outcome. Former Maharashtra minister Anil Deshmukh labeled the ruling as an affront to democracy, suggesting it was made under duress.

For the Sharad Pawar faction, losing the NCP symbol to Ajit Pawar's group presents a critical juncture. They now face the choice of forming a new political entity, as offered by the Commission. The faction must submit their preferred name for the new political formation and select preferences for upcoming Rajya Sabha seats by a specified deadline.

Failure to comply with the Commission's directives would lead to MLAs aligned with Sharad Pawar's faction being treated as independent candidates under Rule 39AA of the Conduct of Election Rules, 1961. This decision poses a significant challenge for the Sharad Pawar camp, requiring prompt action to navigate the evolving political landscape.
