under the existing rules, only a person with 25 years of experience in matters related to environmental protection or having experience in institutions dealing with the matters relating to environmental protection can be appointed to the post.

The Maharashtra Government has appointed Siddhesh Kadam, son of Shiv Sena leader Ramdas Kadam, as the new chairman of the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB). This decision has raised concerns due to the existing rules which require a candidate to have 25 years of experience in environmental protection or related institutions. Kadam, being 41 years old and lacking such extensive experience, has drawn criticism.

The previous chairman, IAS officer A L Jarhad, was removed from the post on March 6, 2024, citing prolonged absence without reason. The appointment of Kadam is based on powers conferred by relevant laws and rules, but it has sparked debates regarding eligibility criteria and adherence to guidelines.

Kadam defends his appointment, stating that the government thoroughly reviewed his qualifications before making the decision. He asserts his credentials, highlighting his science background and experience working on environmental issues both domestically and internationally.

However, critics, including former MPCB chairmen, point out potential legal challenges and emphasize the importance of adhering to Supreme Court guidelines in such appointments.

Efforts to obtain clarification from relevant authorities, including the Chief Minister's office and the environment department, have been unsuccessful. Chief Secretary Nitin Kareer, when contacted, was unavailable for comment.

Overall, Kadam's appointment has stirred controversy, raising questions about the adherence to eligibility criteria and the transparency of the selection process
