Ishan Kishan directed to feature in Ranji Trophy for India return, BCCI prefers new Test keeper.

Despite the controversy surrounding Ishan Kishan's absence from Afghanistan T20Is, he emerges as the top contender for the wicketkeeper's role in England Tests. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) aims to replace KL Rahul and has directed Kishan to prove his fitness in a Ranji Trophy match scheduled before the five-match series starting January 25.

Amid reports suggesting Kishan's exclusion from the Afghanistan T20Is, speculations arose about a possible trust issue between him and the team management. However, India's head coach, Rahul Dravid, clarified that there was no disciplinary action against Kishan. Dravid explained that Kishan had requested a break during the South Africa tour, and once available, he would participate in domestic cricket, making himself eligible for national selection.

Earlier concerns were raised when Kishan was seen partying in Dubai during his leave for 'mental fatigue.' His requests for breaks from national duties since the ODI World Cup last year have stirred debates. Despite irregular opportunities in the playing XI, Kishan has capitalized on chances when given, showcasing his talent.

Under Dravid's leadership, the policy mandates players to prove their fitness in domestic matches after missing games due to injury or other reasons. However, this policy wasn't consistently enforced last year, sparking media scrutiny over Kishan's non-selection.

The 25-year-old now faces a pivotal moment, having received a clear directive to participate in first-class cricket if he aspires to reclaim the primary wicketkeeper's role for the England series. Conflicting reports on his availability for Jharkhand's upcoming fixture against Services in Delhi from January 19 add uncertainty. While some sources suggest Kishan might make himself available, others propose he may skip Ranji Trophy and head directly to IPL 2024 with the Mumbai Indians if not selected for the England series.

In this complex situation, Kishan's choices and actions will determine his role in the upcoming cricketing events, leaving questions about commitment and priorities in the air.
