Jordan Thompson Clinches Maiden ATP Title in Los Cabos Triumph Over Casper Ruud

Jordan Thompson has reached a significant milestone in his career by clinching his first ATP title at the Los Cabos Open in Mexico. The Australian emerged victorious over Casper Ruud, the world No. 12, in a straight-set triumph of 6-3, 7-6 (4) on Saturday night.

Throughout the tournament, Thompson, seeded eighth and ranked No. 40, demonstrated remarkable resilience and versatility. He competed for a total of 12 hours across five matches, staging a remarkable comeback from 6-0, 3-0 down against Alex Michelsen in the quarter-finals, where he saved three match points. Additionally, he triumphed over top seed and world No. 6 Alexander Zverev in a marathon semi-final lasting three hours and 42 minutes.

In the final showdown against Ruud, who had previously defeated defending champion Stefanos Tsitsipas in the semi-finals, Thompson faced a formidable challenge. Despite Ruud's impressive track record of 11 ATP titles, including three that year, Thompson displayed confidence and aggression throughout the match.

In the first set, Thompson broke Ruud's serve three times while saving seven out of eight break points on his own. Employing his slice and net skills effectively, he disrupted Ruud's rhythm and forced him into a defensive stance. Although Ruud fought back in the second set, leveling the score and pushing for a tie-break, Thompson regrouped and seized control, ultimately securing victory with a forehand winner on his first championship point.

Celebrating his maiden ATP title with exuberance, Thompson became the first Australian to triumph in Los Cabos. Furthermore, his ascent to a career-high ranking of No. 32 solidified his position as the second-highest ranked Australian, following Alex de Minaur.

Reflecting on his achievement, Thompson expressed gratitude to his support network, including his coach, family, and friends. Despite falling short in the doubles final alongside partner Max Purcell, Thompson's singles triumph stood as a testament to his determination and skill.

Ruud, gracious in defeat, congratulated Thompson on his victory, acknowledging his exceptional performance. "He played a great match, he deserved to win. He was the better player today," Ruud remarked. "He's a great guy and a great competitor. I'm happy for him."
