Lionel Messi steps onto the pitch, but Inter Miami suffers a penalty shootout loss to Vissel Kobe.

Following a disappointing outing in Hong Kong, Lionel Messi made a 30-minute appearance in Tokyo during Inter Miami's recent exhibition match in Asia, aiming to conclude their worldwide tour on a positive note. Despite his presence, some fans were left wanting more. Messi entered the game as a substitute in the final half-hour, injecting energy into his team and creating opportunities, notably in the 80th minute when he had two close-range shots saved by Vissel Kobe's defense.

The match ended in a 0-0 draw, leading to a penalty shootout, which Vissel Kobe won 4-3. Interestingly, Messi didn't participate in the shootout, prompting jeers from the Tokyo crowd, although the reaction was less severe compared to the backlash he faced in Hong Kong. In Hong Kong, Messi remained on the bench due to a groin injury, sparking outrage among fans and even demands for refunds. However, in Tokyo, Messi addressed the situation in a rare press conference, expressing contrition and uncertainty about his fitness until he warmed up in the second half, drawing cheers from the crowd.

Despite Inter Miami's efforts, Vissel Kobe dominated much of the match, hitting the post twice in the first half and creating numerous scoring opportunities. This match in Tokyo marked the conclusion of Inter Miami's global promotional tour, which spanned various locations from El Salvador to Dallas, Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong, and finally, Tokyo. Throughout the tour, Inter Miami only managed to secure one victory out of six games.

Looking ahead, Inter Miami's preseason will culminate on February 16 in Florida against Newell's Old Boys, Messi's childhood club from Rosario, Argentina. Many speculate that Messi may eventually conclude his illustrious career there. Notably, Inter Miami boasts a roster filled with former Barcelona players, including Luis Suarez, Jordi Alba, and Sergio Busquets.

Before the match, Andres Iniesta, another former Barcelona star who played several seasons in Japan with Vissel Kobe, addressed the crowd briefly, adding to the spectacle of the occasion.
