NCP Leader Criticizes CM Shinde's Response to Maratha Quota Demand

The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Chhagan Bhujbal strongly criticized the Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde's actions regarding the Maratha quota demand, labeling them as mere "eyewash." Bhujbal, who serves as the minister for food and civil supplies in the state, expressed skepticism over the inclusion of Marathas into the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category, questioning the legitimacy of their entry through what he termed as a "backdoor" route.

The controversy arose after Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange Patil ended his protest following the government's issuance of a draft ordinance addressing reservations in education and jobs under the OBC category, with Shinde offering Patil juice to break his hunger strike.

Bhujbal criticized the government's move to grant Kunbi certificates to all Marathas, emphasizing that caste is determined by birth, not by legal affidavits. He raised concerns about potential injustice to both OBCs and Marathas, suggesting that intellectuals from the Maratha community should consider the implications. Bhujbal also questioned the concept of Marathas gaining OBC benefits until they secure reservation, highlighting the potential for similar demands from other communities based on blood relations.

Further, Bhujbal objected to Jarange's demand for reserved job vacancies and 100% free education solely for Marathas, advocating for equal opportunities across all castes, including Brahmins. He announced plans to convene discussions with OBC leaders to address the issue.
