Nicholas Pooran and West Indies Create History with 36 Runs in One Over Against Afghanistan.

Several records were shattered during the T20 World Cup 2024 Group C match between the West Indies and Afghanistan on Tuesday. Batting first, the West Indies set a formidable total of 218/5 in their 20 overs, with Nicholas Pooran delivering a blistering innings of 98 off 53 balls. This was the highest total in the ongoing T20 World Cup. The highlight of the innings was Pooran’s entry into the elite list of batters who have scored 36 runs in a single over in a World Cup match.

This remarkable feat occurred in the fourth over, when Pooran unleashed his fury on Afghanistan all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai. During the over, the 28-year-old struck three sixes and three fours. To make matters worse for Omarzai, he bowled a no-ball that Pooran hit for another boundary, and he also conceded five runs from a wide.

Additionally, the West Indies set a new record for the highest powerplay score in T20 World Cup history, amassing 92 runs in the first six overs. This surpassed the previous record of 91 runs set by the Netherlands against Ireland in 2014 at Sylhet International Stadium in Bangladesh.

England holds the third-highest powerplay score, with 89 runs against South Africa at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium in 2016.

In terms of overall T20I powerplay scores, this was the fourth highest. The highest powerplay score is 102/0, recorded by South Africa against the West Indies in 2023.

Pooran also recorded the highest individual score in the ongoing T20 World Cup, his 98 off 53 balls helping his team reach a formidable total of 218 runs in their final group game before the Super Eight phase. This broke the previous mark of 94 not out set by Aaron Jones of the United States against Canada.
