Olympic Medalist Sakshi Malik Quits Wrestling in Protest Over Controversial WFI Election

Olympic medallist Sakshi Malik announced her resignation from wrestling in protest after a supporter of BJP parliamentarian Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh was elected as the president of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI). Earlier this year, top male and female wrestlers had protested against Brij Bhushan, accusing him of sexual harassment during his tenure as WFI chief. The newly elected WFI president, Sanjay Singh, and his panel secured victory in Thursday's elections. Sakshi expressed her disappointment at the election outcome, emphasizing the need for a female president. Wrestler Bajrang Punia criticized the government for allowing Brij Bhushan loyalists to contest despite assurances to the contrary. The accusations against Brij Bhushan include demands for "sexual favours," and six adult women wrestlers have filed FIRs against him. Despite the protests and legal actions, the election results led to Sakshi Malik's emotional decision to quit wrestling.
