Retired Indian Army Officer Killed in Attack on UN Vehicle in Rafah, Gaza

Colonel Vaibhav Anil Kale, a 46-year-old retired Indian Army officer, was killed in an attack on a United Nations vehicle in Rafah, Gaza, on Monday. The incident marks the first casualty among the UN’s international staff in Gaza since the onset of the Israel-Hamas conflict in October last year. Colonel Kale was traveling to the European Hospital in Rafah when the vehicle came under fire. He was a staff member of the United Nations Department of Safety and Security (DSS) and had only joined the UNDSS as a Security Coordination Officer two months prior. He arrived in Gaza about a month ago.

The attack also injured another DSS staff member who was traveling with Colonel Kale. The UN has called for a thorough investigation into the incident, while Israel has announced a separate inquiry. Colonel Kale is survived by his wife and two daughters.

Before joining the UN, Colonel Kale had a distinguished career in the Indian Army, retiring in 2022. His role at the UNDSS involved ensuring the safety and security of UN personnel in high-risk areas, a critical responsibility given the ongoing conflict in Gaza.

The loss of Colonel Kale underscores the dangers faced by UN personnel working in conflict zones and has prompted calls for enhanced measures to protect those providing humanitarian aid and security. The international community, particularly the UN, has expressed deep condolences to Colonel Kale's family and has reiterated the need for accountability and justice in response to this tragic incident. The attack highlights the escalating risks and the urgent need for peace and security in the region.
