Sakshi Malik announces resignation from wrestling, citing refusal to compete under Brij Bhushan loyalist presidency.

Sakshi Malik, a prominent Indian wrestler and Olympic bronze medalist, has declared her retirement from the sport in protest against the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI). The catalyst for Malik's decision was the replacement of Brij Bhushan Singh, former WFI president accused of sexually abusing female athletes, with his ally Sanjay Singh. Malik, who had been a vocal critic of Singh, expressed her discontent during a press conference in New Delhi. She referred to the earlier protests, emphasizing the support received during the 40-day demonstration on the streets.

The allegations against Brij Bhushan Singh, including sexual harassment of six female wrestlers, prompted a government investigation. Despite Singh's denial and a promise to hang himself if proven guilty, he was stripped of administrative duties in January. Malik and fellow athletes resumed protests in April after the government withheld the findings of the investigative panel.

In the recent WFI election, Sanjay Singh emerged victorious, securing 40 out of 47 votes. Anita Sheoran, a contender who had supported athletes in highlighting abuse allegations, lost the presidency bid. Sanjay Singh, who replaces Brij Bhushan Singh, declared his commitment to supporting wrestlers but did not comment on Malik's retirement.

The controversy surrounding the WFI led to the suspension of the Indian federation by the United World Wrestling (UWW) in August. UWW is yet to comment on the recent election.

Sakshi Malik's decision underscores the broader issues of harassment and discrimination faced by female athletes in India. Her retirement serves as a powerful statement against the appointment of individuals associated with alleged misconduct, highlighting the need for accountability and transparency within sports organizations.
