Strategic Maneuvers: Eknath Shinde's Calculated Move in Maratha Politics

Shinde was in dire need of support from the Maratha community for his political base. When he witnessed the influence of Manoj Jarange Patil in coercing the state government, Shinde saw an opportunity to win favor with the Maratha agitators by meeting Patil's demands. On January 27, a significant event unfolded as Shinde presented Patil with a government resolution granting over 25 million Marathas eligibility for reservations in government jobs and quotas by introducing the term "sage-soyre" into the resolution. This term, referring to a chain of relatives linking those with Kunbi certificates, would exponentially increase the number of Marathas eligible for reservations under the OBC quota.

This move, though seemingly a victory for Patil and the Maratha agitators, has deeper implications for both Maratha and OBC politics in Maharashtra. Despite allegations suggesting involvement from political figures like Sharad Pawar, it's evident that both Shinde and Pawar have their reasons for supporting Patil. Shinde, particularly, saw an opportunity to gain support from the disenfranchised Marathas, distinct from the influential 96 kuli Marathas who traditionally held power.

Patil's rise as a leader stems from his refusal to align with established politicians, which resonated with the disillusioned Maratha populace. Despite initial lack of support from political elites, his unwavering stance and promise to represent the ordinary Marathas garnered widespread support. Shinde's decision to accommodate Patil's demands was strategic, aiming to gain favor with the significant Maratha voter base. The collaboration between Shinde and Patil, while not openly acknowledged, seems orchestrated to benefit both parties politically
