The political landscape in Maharashtra appears uncertain as the BJP prepares to welcome back a veteran leader who had previously parted ways, citing grievances against Devendra Fadnavis.

Currently an MLC with Sharad Pawar NCP, Eknath Khadse was a founder member of BJP and holds clout in North Maharashtra, a BJP bastion where the party is facing problems

Eknath Khadse, a prominent leader formerly associated with the NCP under Sharad Pawar's faction, is reportedly poised to rejoin his original party, the BJP, ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. This move comes as the BJP grapples with internal challenges in North Maharashtra, a region where it has traditionally held strong influence.

Having been part of the Sangh Parivar for over four decades, starting with the Jan Sangh and playing a foundational role in the BJP, Khadse had left the BJP in October 2020 to join the unified NCP. Currently serving as an MLC for the NCP (Sharadchandra Pawar), Khadse's potential return to the BJP has been a topic of speculation.

When asked about his return to the BJP, Khadse remained non-committal, stating that he would make a decision after consulting with relevant stakeholders and considering various aspects. It is understood that the central BJP leadership has been instrumental in reaching out to Khadse, aiming to facilitate his switch back to the party before the challenging Lok Sabha elections.

Khadse's previous departure from the BJP was marked by tensions with figures like Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Cabinet Minister Girish Mahajan, whom Khadse accused of undermining his influence in North Maharashtra. Despite these past grievances, sources indicate that Khadse's return to the BJP is not hindered by these issues, as organizational priorities and electoral strategies take precedence over personal differences.

Seen as a highly respected leader in North Maharashtra, particularly among the Leva Patil community (an OBC group), Khadse's re-entry into the BJP fold is hoped to alleviate discontent in crucial constituencies like Jalgaon and Raver. These constituencies hold significance as part of the BJP's stronghold, comprising six Lok Sabha seats and 36 Assembly constituencies.

The BJP's efforts to address internal discontent in North Maharashtra are evident, with recent shifts like MP Unmesh Patil joining Shiv Sena and concerns over candidate selections. Khadse's influence is seen as pivotal in resolving such issues and consolidating the BJP's position in the region.

Despite past conflicts, BJP state chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule expresses confidence in the party's prospects in North Maharashtra, citing a strong organization and committed cadre.

The rift between Khadse and Fadnavis traces back to the 2014 Assembly elections when Khadse had aspired for the CM position, which ultimately went to Fadnavis. Khadse later faced corruption allegations, leading to his resignation as a minister in 2016. Despite assurances of reinstatement pending investigation outcomes, Khadse's frustrations grew, contributing to his eventual exit from the BJP.

Khadse's stint in the NCP was characterized by a perceived lack of recognition, further prompting considerations for his return to the BJP. However, personal ties within his family, notably his daughter Rohini Khadse's senior position in the NCP, add complexity to his decision-making process..
